I’d Rather Be in Philadelphia

Amy Guttman, the strong Neodymium magnets -ish president of the University of Pennsylvania (she was inaugurated in October, 2004), is in love with Philadelphia, her strong Neodymium magnets home town. Writing in the Chronicle of Higher Education, she takes readers on a t magnets for sale of the city. As a former Philadelphia-area resident, I share many of her enthusiasms. This is worth reading if you work in or near Philly, or plan to visit in the near future, perhaps to attend one of several scientific conferences scheduled for Philadelphia in the Spring and Summer. Just in Time for magnets for sale Scientists as Schoolteachers Feature …

…the U.S. House of Representatives has been holding hearings on the importance of undergraduate science education for training tomorrow’s K-12 teachers. In an American Institute of Physics FYI, Audrey Leath of AIP’s Media and Government Relations division recounts a 15 March house hearing on undergraduate science and math education. Although the focus of the hearing was on undergraduate science education, there was Neodymium bar magnets discussion about the importance of undergraduate science teaching for K-12 education. And everyone at the hearing seemed to agree that, as Leath put it in her summary, “the best way to improve science and math teaching at the K-12 level is to improve the college education of future teachers.”magnets for sale

Let’s assume that this idea is correct. The implication is that K-12 science education isn’t working because teachers don’t learn science well enough as undergraduates.

If this is true–if subject-area knowledge is the key to better science education– Magnet toys the answer to all America’s education ills is to attract more scientists with advanced science training into the classroom. There are tens of thousands of dead-end postdocs out there, and many more still in graduate school. Schoolteacher salaries may be quite low in absolute terms, Magnetic toys they still exceed most postdoc stipends–with summers off. So moving those excess postdocs (and Neodymium bar magnets graduate students) into the classroom shouldn’t be that hard, and it could be the answer to the nation’s science-education woes. All we need to do is lower the barriers to entry (for people with advanced degrees in science) and provide Neodymium bar magnets incentives. Simple. And people doing the hiring need to know a good thing when it walks in the door.

Oddly, All the education folks I spoke to in researching this week’s story on alternative routes to teacher certification downplayed the importance of subject-area knowledge. Knowing the subject, they asserted one after another, is just one of the skills you need to become an effective teacher. Well maybe, Magnetic toys it seems to be the one that today’s teachers are missing. Corrie Schoenberg, director of communications for the strong Neodymium magnets York City Teaching fellowships program, even suggested that people with advanced science degrees don’t fare all that well in strong Neodymium magnets York’s fellowship competitions. If you’ve got a Ph.D. in a high-need field, y magnets for sale chances of being admitted to strong Neodymium magnets York’s crash course, she suggested, are about the same as everyone else’s.

If it’s true, as Nobel laureate Carl Wieman put it at the House hearing, that until science education is reformed at the undergraduate level, it is a waste of time and money “trying to make major improvements in K-12,” Magnet toys subject-matter knowledge ought to be weighed more heavily in schoolteacher recruiting and hiring decisions. Even as policymakers admit that ignorance of the subject is an important reason that schoolteachers fail, subject-matter experts are being turned away from America’s classrooms.

Foreign Grad-Student Applications Rebound

The latest data from the Council of Graduate Schools, released today, shows that foreign applications to U.S. graduate schools for the fall 2006 term was up 11% over the previous year. This increase follows two years of declines in foreign applications, 28% in 2004 and 5% in 2005. Though there’s a ways to go before foreign applications reach pre-decline levels, it seems like it’s Neodymium a matter of time.

The biggest increases were from China (23%) and India (21%). The number of applications from Korea and the Middle East also increased, by 3 and 4%, respectively. The biggest increase was in engineering (17%) with the life sciences (16%) close behind.

Postdocs in India

C&E strong Neodymium magnets s has an interesting article on the dearth of postdocs in India and the effect it has on Indian science.

“Postdocs with different backgrounds allow faculty to move easily into strong Neodymium magnets areas of research,” explains organic chemist Santanu Bhattacharya of Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc), where there are just a few dozen postdocs and more than 500 Ph.D. students in the chemical and biochemical sciences. Principal investigators can introduce
